Scones in the air fryer

If you’re a fan of scones, you’ll definitely want to try making them in the air fryer! Not only is it a quicker cooking method than the oven-baked scone, but it also results in perfectly golden and crispy. Plus, you’ll still get that classic flaky texture on the inside. The air fryer allows for even heating, so every bite will be just as delicious as the last.

And the best part? You can customize the recipe with your favourite flavours and toppings. From dried fruit to chocolate chips to juicy cherries, the possibilities are endless. Give it a try and enjoy warm and delicious scones in a flash! Croissants also cook well in the air fryer!

How to make plain scones in the air fryer

  • Lightly grease a brownie tin that will fit in your air fryer.
  • Put the flour and baking powder in a bowl and add the rubber. Rub in with fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar.
  • Break the egg into a measuring jug, then make up to 150ml (5 fl oz) with milk. Gradually add to the flour (you may not need it all), and mix to a soft dough.
  • Turn out onto a floured surface and roll out to a thickness of ½ inch (1 cm). Cut into rounds with a fluted cutter and place in the tin.
  • Turn the air fryer to 200℃ and bake for 6 minutes. You could possibly bake these in 5 minutes, but I wanted a golden finish,

Storage for scones

Let’s face it; scones don’t stay fresh for very long. That’s where proper storage comes in. You want to make sure that your scones stay moist and fluffy, not dry and crumbly.

My favourite way to store them is in an airtight container on the kitchen counter. This way, they get to breathe a little but are still protected from the elements. If you’re planning on keeping them for more than a day, consider stashing them in the fridge. And if you want to take things to the next level, try freezing them. Just make sure to wrap them up tightly before chucking them in the freezer. Happy scone-ing!

Easy Air Fryer Scones Quick Recipe (2024)

FAQs

What is the best flour for scones? ›

The secret is using cake flour instead of all-purpose flour. It's lower in protein and makes for ultra-tender scones. If you don't have any on hand, you can easily make your own using all-purpose flour and cornstarch (see the FAQs below). For a kid-friendly twist, don't miss my chocolate chip scones.

How long to heat up scones in air fryer? ›

How do you reheat scones in an air fryer? Air fryers aren't just for baking scones, they're also perfect for reheating them! Simply pop them back in the air fryer basket for 3 minutes at 160C, and they'll be as warm and golden as they were when they were freshly cooked.

Do you need to sift flour for scones? ›

Don't forget to sift!

Be sure to double or even triple sift your flour, as it takes away the clumps in the flour allowing for more air pockets in the scone dough - the result being a fluffier and more crumbly scone.

How do I get my scones to rise more? ›

How to make scones rise high? Once you've cut out your scone shapes, flip them over and place upside down on the baking tray. This will help them rise evenly and counteract any 'squashing' that happened when you cut out the dough. Perfect scones should rise to about 2 inches high.

Should scone dough rest before baking? ›

The resting of the dough helps to relax the dough so everything remains tender, if you kneaded the dough and baked the scones immediately the insides would be great but the outsides would be tough and chewy.

Is heavy cream or buttermilk better for scones? ›

Heavy Cream or Buttermilk: For the best tasting pastries, stick with a thick liquid such as heavy cream or buttermilk. I usually use heavy cream, but if you want a slightly tangy flavor, use buttermilk.

How thick should scone dough be? ›

It is far better that the scone mixture is on the wet side, sticking to your fingers, as the scones will rise better. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and flatten it out with your hand, or use a rolling pin, to a thickness of 1-2 cm (1/2 – ¾ inch).

Why are my scones not fluffy? ›

Placing a dough in a cool oven that then slowly heats up actually affects the rising agent. Make sure your oven is at the right temperature you will be baking the scones at before you put them in. Also having an oven that is too hot or too cold will affect the baking of your scones immensely.

Do things bake faster in air fryer? ›

Air fryers work differently than regular ovens, so getting the temperature and cook time right can take some practice. Most foods cook much faster and brown quicker in an air fryer, so it's best to start with less time and add more if needed.

How do you know when scones are fully cooked? ›

Bake scones in a 425°F oven for 18 to 23 minutes, until they're a very light golden brown. Don't over-bake; dark scones will be dry. Break one open to check for doneness: the interior shouldn't appear doughy or wet, but should feel nicely moist.

What temp should scones be cooked at? ›

Heat the oven to 220C/200C fan/gas 7.

Why do you rub butter into flour for scones? ›

Why? When cold butter is rubbed into the flour, it creates flaky pockets of flavour (which soft, room temperature butter can't do). Once the cold butter and liquid (e.g milk) hits the oven, the water in the butter and cold liquid begins evaporating.

What happens if you don't put baking powder in scones? ›

I didn't use baking powder in the scones I made yesterday and they were light and fluffy but I did use self raising flour. If you used plain flour they might be a bit biscuity! They'll still taste good but might be thin.

Why are my scones heavy and dense? ›

My scones have a dense, heavy texture and poor volume

You may have used too little raising agent or over handled the dough before it was baked. The oven may have been too cool.

How do you make scones rise and not spread? ›

Pack the scones closely on the baking tray so they will support each other as they rise rather than spreading. Make scones the day you need them – they taste far better warm.

What is the best raising agent for scones and why? ›

A mixture of bicarbonate of soda and cream of tartar, or baking powder (which is a ready paired mixture of the two) are used as the raising agent in scones.
