Oil-Free Buffalo Sauce Dressing Recipe | VEEG (1)Oil-Free Buffalo Sauce Dressing is spicy, savory, tangy, delicious and wonderfullyfree of added oils. Many dressings are laden with added fats to serve as a carrier for the peppery heat and other flavors; but not THIS sauce! It’s made using three wholesomeingredients, and it’s ready in five minutes!

My most memorable cooking experience ever is the one that ultimately led to the creation ofOil-Free Buffalo Sauce Dressing!

The first time I ever had buffalo wings was many moons ago when I was a college freshman. My new suitemate was from Buffalo, New York. Some studentsarrive on campus toting hair dryers and mini-fridges; Deb brought a mini fryer and borrowed my dryer. We became fast friends.

After Deb shared a batch of buffalo wings, I completely understood her reasoning for prioritizing a fryer as a necessity for her first year at college. But while we joyfully filled the entire dorm with the aroma of Buffalo wings and hot sauce with our first ever batch, we also landed ourselves in a bit of trouble. As it turned out, it was a big no-no to use a deep fryer in our dorm room – who knew? But the consequence was well worth it. For in the company of a new friend in good old Ohio Hall during my first few weeks at Judson University, my passion for spicy hot Buffalo sauce ignited.

I recall putting about a stick of butter in a bowl and mixing it with Frank’s Redhot Original Cayenne Pepper Sauce. But that was then.

What’s the TASTY Secret Behind Oil-Free Buffalo Sauce Dressing?

In this recipe, I’ve lightened things up quite a bit. I’ve let go of the butter altogether but gave up NONEof the magic of thecreamyspicy sauce.

The secret to the creaminess is in the hemp seeds. Hemp seeds are my favorite! And you’ll love them too once you discover how they deliver creaminess along with nutrients rather than empty, useless fat.

And you’re bound to love the ingredient ratio of myOil-Free Buffalo Sauce Dressing as it is one to one to one. That’s one part Frank’s Redhot Original Cayenne Pepper Sauce, one part hemp seeds, and one part vegetable broth. How easy is that to remember? If you need more, bump it up to a cup or so of each. You get the idea!

Anyhow, this is an Oil-Free Buffalo Sauce Dressing that I know you’ll use in more clever ways than I can even imagine. Use it as a gluten-free,dairy-free, nut-freesalad dressing or a sauce for sandwiches and wraps. Drizzle it on your Buddha Bowls. Oh, and you’ll love how it tastes in our incredibly satisfying recipe for a Vegan Tempeh Blue Cheese Buffalo Bowl. Seriously, this dressing will surely ROCK YOURWORLD! • I certainly mean no disrespect and appreciate the endeavor to present more nutritious Vegan sauce options. That said, this recipe has quite a bit of sodium 650mg per serving which in a single serving is close to half the percentage of the recommended daily amount. In addition, the recipe includes processed oil which has been shown to harden the lining of blood vessels (arteries), promoting coronary artery disease.

Perhaps you can suggest a healthier alternative to Franks pepper sauce, like a do-it-yourself option for example.

    1. Though the “Original Frank’s Redhot Original Cayenne Pepper Sauce” suggested in our recipe does not contain oil, we thank you for your suggestion of using a homemade hot sauce as an alternative – that’s a splendid idea for those inclined to do so.

  • Wow! My new buffalo sauce! Delicious and simple! The hemp seeds do make it very creamy. I read John’s comment and then read the ingredients in my bottle of Frank’s. No oil, it does have sodium, 190mg per serving (which is 1 tsp) and a serving is 8% of the daily value. I am definitely having more than 1 teaspoon with my tofu salad tonight. Guess I’ll have to start making my own hot sauce after I finish the 6 25 ounce bottles of Franks in my pantry! Subscribed to the newsletter for more delicious, simple recipes!

    1. Creamy is right, Dana – gotta appreciate and give a shout out to those hemp seeds! We made this sauce tonight as a seasoning for tempeh in our Buffalo Bowl recipe – so yum!

Sounds like you’re well stocked on hot sauce – so you’ll have to make another batch and try that bowl sometime.

Thanks for trying the sauce and signing up for the newsletter to stay in touch with what’s new – we’ll keep the recipes coming!

Here’s the recipe using tempeh and another one with corn tortilla strips – both feature that sauce.

  • This recipe is fantastic! It’s so versatile…I put it on everything. And the best part is how easy it is to make. Thank you so much for creating it!

    1. Thank you for your glowing feedback, Naomi – this recipe is a pleasure, start to finish, thanks to those naturally creamy hemp seeds!

  • I commented in March of 2020 on how good this sauce is. I am currently making my version of buffalo jackfruit to go on homemade pizza, store bought crust though 🙁 I used 1/2 cup of each ingredient and then added 1/8 cup of veggie broth to thin it (still tasted delicious). I drained a can of jackfruit & pulsed it in the food processor (next time I will pull apart or cut with a knife so it is not so mushy). I added about 1/3 of my thinned sauce and the jackfruit in my instant pot & pressure cooked on high for 2 minutes. It came out mushy but tasted fantastic! I put it in kind of spread out plops on my pizza. It was yummy! Husband thought so too!

  • Absolutely delicious!! I have some hemp seeds that needed to be used up and I figured this would be good but boy, oh, boy it’s better than ‘good’.

    1. Thanks for letting us know that you’re enjoying this recipe, Laura. Including a few hemp seeds in sauces and smoothies adds a nice bit of creaminess and boosts nutrients; it’s a win-win.

What can I use instead of butter in buffalo sauce? ›

This was our favorite for a new homemade Buffalo sauce recipe. You go in with the usual hot sauce and minced garlic. Then instead of Buffalo sauce's standard melted butter, you use a combination of olive oil and lemon juice.

How do you keep butter from separating in buffalo sauce? ›

If your butter keeps separating from your hot sauce, it just means that it hasn't been mixed well enough. Instead of using a spoon, try mixing your buffalo sauce with a whisk instead.

What is Buffalo sauce made of ingredients? ›

In its simplest form, buffalo wing sauce is a just a combination of cayenne pepper hot sauce and butter. My recipe calls for a few additional ingredients to help balance the flavors, but it's still very straightforward. If you keep a bottle of Frank's RedHot in your fridge, you can whip it up anytime!

What was the original Buffalo sauce made of? ›

The original buffalo wing sauce contained melted butter, hot sauce, and cayenne pepper. This differentiates it from other hot sauces like Tabasco, which is made mainly with peppers and vinegar. Buffalo sauce isn't short on the heat though, which is why it's never far from cooling agents.

A good rule of thumb is to replace about 3/4 of the butter in a recipe with olive, canola, or vegetable oil. (If the recipe calls for 1 cup butter, use ¾ cup oil.)

Butter adds a velvety smooth richness. It also balances the flavors of the other ingredients. White vinegar lends welcome acidity and a pleasant tanginess. Worcestershire sauce deepens the flavor, cayenne pepper turns up the heat, and garlic powder adds a powerful bite.

How do you make buffalo sauce thicker without cornstarch? ›

The Fix Is Simple—Add Water Back.

A generous splash of water is all it takes. Here's how fix a broken sauce: Add about ¼ cup of water to the pan and reheat the sauce to a vigorous simmer, whisking constantly. The bubbling action will help re-emulsify the butter and bring back that thick, glossy sauce.

Can sugar make sauce thicker? ›

    Add a little sugar

Sugar doesn't thicken in quite the same way as starch or fat, but it does make your sauce stickier, and getting your sauce to stick to the food is the entire point. Adding sugar to water creates a solution that is thicker than water, and further heating (boiling or simmering) makes it even thicker.

This happens when there's too much fat or liquid in the mixture. This can happen when there are not enough emulsifiers (which help keep your ingredients together). Sauces are usually made from multiple ingredients that include both oil and water. Oils and water will naturally separate.
